History
St. John’s College was founded in 1696 by William Smith as King William’s School, an Anglican institution. In the late 18th century, it briefly became a military academy before being reestablished as St. John’s College in 1784.
The college remained small and sought to establish itself as a leading liberal arts institution. In 1937, under the leadership of Stringfellow Barr and Scott Buchanan, the college adopted its distinctive Great Books Program.
Great Books Program
The Great Books Program at St. John’s College is centered around studying influential texts from ancient Greece to modern times. This program has been a cornerstone of the college’s curriculum and identity since its inception in 1937.
