Maher’s Florist is celebrating our 44th year in the floral business. Winnie Maher opened the doors for the first time March 1, 1977 and the vision has always remained the same, even now that her daughter Kim has taken over the reigns. That vision is superior customer service and creating unique and distinct designs, all while supporting local growers, by using locally source flowers whenever possible. Our talented staff has a deep passion and love for flowers. Each with over 20 years of design expertise. Our designers are eager to help you create a lasting impression for any occasion.
March 8, 2021 is International Women’s Day. Maher’s Florist offers fresh and dazzling flower arrangements to honor a special woman or women’s group on this day. When you look back in history, it is amazing how much progress has been made for Women’s equality. Women now hold many powerful and influential positions within our society. Of course this was not always the case.
The first International Women’s Day was held in the United States in 1909. Then the day began to gain popularity in other countries and by 1911 it was observed in Austria, Denmark, Germany and Switzerland. In honor of this in 2011 there was a 100 year anniversary to celebrate.
So here it is 2021 and the world is a changed place in so many ways. One way is that women now have gained momentum in terms of job equality and opportunity. That is not to say there is not still room for improvement but much progress has been made in a century. You now find women in numerous high level roles within the public and private sector. Women now can be found in many boardrooms.
In order to honor the meaning of International Women’s Day, a beautiful flower arrangement from Maher’s Florist will be a welcomed surprise. Then to carry on that effort, below are some ideas to create a positive environment.
- Boost self-esteem – Common sense to make a person feel like they are special and have great ideas and abilities. If you have a daughter what better reason than to boost her self esteem. Encourage individuality and the pursuit of education.
- Eliminate negativity – Tough to be a women with all the pressure from beauty ads and social media. Help to cut through all of that and promote the positive aspects of intelligence and honesty.
- Lead by example – People who have experienced success in their careers owe it to younger workers to be a good role model. Young women starting out will look up to positive role models and want to emulate that successful behavior. You may become their mentor and career buddy as some companies like to create.
- Support businesses – Small businesses are vital to our community. Women run small businesses can use the extra support by way of investment, donations, or simply doing business with them.
- Show your appreciation – This one is fairly obvious. Think about all of the wonderful things the women in your life do to contribute to society. Show the women in your life how much you appreciate them by sending a thank you card, giving them a compliment, or simply telling them what they mean to you.

So what does 44 years in the industry look like? Here are some highlights from our owners.
- March 1st 1977 – Doors were opened for the first time.
- 1st and 2nd locations were on Ft Smallwood Road before moving to the current location on Edwin Raynor Blvd. ( third location)
- In the beginning Winnie was the only full time employee with the occasional help of her sister, Lil Hyde and Skip, Winnies husband, who delivered in the afternoon/evening after his full time job each day.
- At 78 years old, Winnie is still a part of the daily operations of the shop.
- Kim, Winnies daughter, is now the main staple in the business and hoping to continue to grow the business in the same fashion as her mom. With a superior level of product from all over the world and a high standard of customer service.
- The Maher family has always had a deep connection to the Pasadena community and have always made it a priority to give back. Becoming involved in the Pasadena Business Association, North Anne Arundel Chamber of Commerce and Severna Park and Arnold Chamber of Commerce.
- We have been voted Pasadena’s Best Florist for 11 years in a row by the readers of the Pasadena Voice.
