This year, Maher’s Florist celebrates our 44th year in the floral business. Winnie Maher opened the doors for the first time March 1, 1977 and the vision has always remained the same, even now that her daughter Kim has taken over the reigns. This is a favorite Spring holiday with the parades, easter egg hunts and families gathering for church and Easter dinner. An interesting and maybe not a commonly known fact about Easter is that it is referred to as the "moveable feast". This is because Easter is a Religious Holiday that moves from year to year.  Not every holiday can claim that.  Easter occurs after the first Full Moon following the start of Spring. This April Full Moon is referred to as the "Paschal Moon" or Pink Moon and is April's first Full Moon.  Easter, as with other holidays, ushers in a changing of the seasons. That season of course being Spring. Early history reveals that the Easter festival was more celebrated by Catholics than Protestants. The Puritans of New England considered both Easter and Christmas as festivals for heavy drinking and merrymaking. However, by the 19th century this belief had changed, and the holidays became a time to spend joyous moments with family. Today customary traditions of Easter Egg Hunting, Parades and the Easter Bunny have become the norm. Passover In the Jewish faith, this time of the year is referred to as Passover. The Hebrew Bible commemorates Passover as a festival which celebrates the liberation of the Jewish people from slavery in Egypt. This is referenced in the Book of Exodus. During the time of Jesus, Jewish pilgrims flocked to Jerusalem in hope that God would liberate them from the Romans. On one Passover, Jesus traveled to Jerusalem and the resulting disturbance in the Temple ultimately led to his crucifixion. Lilacs - Found in several varieties, Lilacs are colorful and very fragrant. Grape hyacinth - Another of the great plants for a pot, these have small bright blue flowers. They do have a tendency to spread easily so occasional thinning may be needed. Bearded iris - Defined by their ruffs and falls which are the outer and inner petals, the hair looking growth in the center gives them the nickname, bearded Iris.
