This year, Maher’s Florist celebrates our 44th year in the floral business. Winnie Maher opened the doors for the first time March 1, 1977 and the vision has always remained the same, even now that her daughter Kim has taken over the reigns. Winnie Maher opened the doors for the first time March 1, 1977 and the vision has always remained the same, even now that her daughter Kim has taken over the reigns. March 8, 2021 is International Women's Day. Maher's Florist offers fresh and dazzling flower arrangements to honor a special woman or women's group on this day. When you look back in history, it is amazing how much progress has been made for Women's equality. Women now hold many powerful and influential positions within our society. Of course this was not always the case. The first International Women's Day was held in the United States in 1909. Then the day began to gain popularity in other countries and by 1911 it was observed in Austria, Denmark, Germany and Switzerland. In honor of this in 2011 there was a 100 year anniversary to celebrate. So here it is 2021 and the world is a changed place in so many ways. One way is that women now have gained momentum in terms of job equality and opportunity. That is not to say there is not still room for improvement but much progress has been made in a century. You now find women in numerous high level roles within the public and private sector. Women now can be found in many boardrooms. In order to honor the meaning of International Women's Day, a beautiful flower arrangement from Maher's Florist will be a welcomed surprise. Then to carry on that effort, below are some ideas to create a positive environment. Boost self-esteem - Common sense to make a person feel like they are special and have great ideas and abilities. If you have a daughter what better reason than to boost her self esteem. Encourage individuality and the pursuit of education. Eliminate negativity - Tough to be a women with all the pressure from beauty ads and social media. Help to cut through all of that and promote the positive aspects of intelligence and honesty. Lead by example - People who have experienced success in their careers owe it to younger workers to be a good role model. Saint Valentine was said to have gone against the laws of the Roman courts by performing marriages for soldiers and helping persecuted Christians. He was then imprisoned and sentenced to execution. Before his sentence was carried out he cured the blindness of a woman named Julia. She was the daughter of his jailer. He also wrote her a letter before his sentence was carried out and signed it "Your Valentine". Per the English historian, John Fox, Saint Valentine was buried in the Church of Praxedes in Rome. It is thought, according to legend, that Julia herself planted a pink-blossomed almond tree near his grave. That tree remains a symbol of their devotion, love and friendship. Saint Valentine wore a purple amethyst ring as is thought by some. This ring was commonly worn by Christian Bishops. It had the image of Cupid carved on it which as we know is a symbol today of love. In those times it was associated with love that was legal in the Roman Empire. Due to the association of the ring and Saint Valentine, the amethyst is the birthstone of February and is thought to attract love.
